Synopsis : The Dongria Kondh are an indigenous community with a population of 8,000 people residing in the sacred forested hills of Niyamgiri (Odisha, India). For nearly two decades the community has been engaged in a desperate campaign to save their sacred lands from being taken over by bauxite mining companies. While the community won a decade long legal battle to stop mining proposals the sacred land of Niyamgiri is now besieged by paramilitary soldiers. Dongria Kondh activists and leaders face regular harassment, torture and incarceration for their campaign.

Director Bio : 38-year-old Surya Shankar is an activist-filmmaker based in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He has made several documentaries on indigenous people's movements. He is the founder of Video Republic. His films have been screened across the nation in various film festivals as well as international forums. He has addressed the German parliament on two occassions and had his films screened there too. He has also trained several indigenous people to make their own films. Recently his first work of fiction, Psychedelhi, was released online and has received encouraging reviews by critics. As an activist he has played a significant role in the struggle of the Dongria Kondh tribe against British mining giant Vedanta. He has also setup the Niyamgiri Resource Centre for the Dongria Kondh community to have access to information resources.
