Synopsis : Shivendra Singh Dungarpur first met Jiří Menzel in a café in Prague on October 19, 2010. And so began a journey over eight years that has culminated in a seven-hour film that not only explores Menzel’s deceptively whimsical films, but also discovers the fascinating world of the Czechoslovakian New Wave peopled by brilliant artists making films under an oppressive regime.
Director Bio : Shivendra Singh Dungarpur is an award-winning Indian filmmaker, producer, film archivist and restorer. He studied film direction and script-writing at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. After graduating from FTII, Shivendra launched his career as a producer-director under his own banner — Dungarpur Films. Shivendra started his career soon after he graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, (FTII) Pune with a diploma in direction and script-writing. He established Dungarpur Films in 2000 and has directed and produced almost 600 commercials, corporate films, short films, television serial and documentaries under this banner. Over the years, he has won innumerable awards for his work in advertising. Shivendra made his first feature documentary “Celluloid Man” (2012). The film, while paying tribute to India’s legendary film archivist, P.K. Nair also highlighted the early history of Indian cinema and the urgent need to preserve India’s cinematic heritage. The film won two National Awards and travelled to over fifty festivals around the world including Telluride, New York, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Shanghai. His second documentary “The Immortals” (2015) was produced by the Busan International Film Festival, which debuted at the festival. It was also screened at the Mumbai and Kolkata festivals and was selected for the National Competition section of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF 2016) for Documentary, Short and Animation Films where it won the Special Jury Award for the Best Film. Shivendra is passionately committed to film preservation and restoration. He has collaborated on two world-class restoration projects with Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation: Uday Shankar’s classic film “Kalpana” (1948) and eminent Sri Lankan filmmaker Dr. Lester James Peries’ film “Nidhanaya” (1970) that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and Venice Film Festival 2013 respectively. He was a donor for the restoration of Hitchcock’s silent film “The Lodger” that was done by the British Film Institute. He has been invited to be a member of the Artistic Committee of the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna that includes amongst others Alexander Payne, Thelma Schoonmaker, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Jean Douchet, Aki Kaurismaki, Peter Becker and Kevin Brownlow. He is also a member of the Honorary Committee of the Nitrate Picture Show, George Eastman House’s Festival of Film Conservation. He is the Founder Director Film Heritage Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Mumbai to work towards preserving and restoring India’s cinematic heritage.
