Synopsis : At a carnival in Germany, Francis (Friedrich Feher) and his friend Alan (Rudolf Lettinger) encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). The men see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare (Conrad Veidt), a hypnotized man who the doctor claims can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare then predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy has come true -- making Cesare the prime suspect. However, is Cesare guilty, or is the doctor controlling him?
Director Bio : Robert Wiene was born on April 24, 1873 in Breslau, Silesia, Germany. Former stage actor, writer and director, graduate of Vienna University, who first worked in films from 1913. He had a reputation as a director of melodramas, before he made his most famous film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), which is considered one of the best examples of German expressionism. His other noteworthy work in the same vein was the horror film The Hands of Orlac (1924). Wiene escaped Nazi persecution by seeking exile in France, where he died in 1938.
