Synopsis : The film is an allegory of fear and is about a loveless mother-daughter relationship which, over times, acquires mutual understanding. Mother and daughter are united by the fear of a fictional man-eating wolf, which was invented by the mother On a philosophical level, it is a reflection about the loss of purity of thoughts which is the principle condition for human existence and is an illustration of the proverb, " The dream of the mind gives birth to monsters". Twenty year old Ala is a female photographer from Saint Petersburg. She is unsatisfied with her life and has financial difficulties. Together, she and her three year old son, Vasenka, go to Nebloye, the village where Ala's mother lives. Ala's mother is still young and a former ballerina who preferred life in Saint Petersburg to the life in a remote village. Ala intends to make her mother feel responsible for herself and her grandson and, albeit temporarily, solve their financial problems by selling the village house. The mother is not contemplating the sale of the house. Upon returning home from a village disco, the mother decides to irritate her daughter and composes a horror story about a man-eating wolf. But in the end both women succumb to an irrational fear and find evidence for its existence. Fear and belief in the wolf's reality unite both mother and daughter, who for the first time in a long while find mutual understanding and value their relationship. But one morning everything takes a turn. A neighbour show them an ordinary wolf which he had shot with a double barreled shotgun. Ala and her mother feel a strange sense of remorse and bury the animal. The fear and with it the family feelings dissipated. The mother refuses to help her daughter and Ala returns to Saint Petersburg. On the journey back, she sees a fire, the forest in which the imaginary wolf lived is burning.
