Synopsis : The film director and theatre activist Manoj Kana, after 20 years' theatre activism among the tribals painted his valuable experience on a vast platform which gave rise to the film, Kenjira. It is the 'Paniya' tribe, an all time victims of brutal exploitation who appears on the screen to manifest their own ordeal. The story progresses through the life of Kenjira, a Paniyan girl studying in nineth standard. In the fight against her dampening hunger, she goes through various incidents of humiliation and sexual assault. She becomes a mother of one at the age of 13. Though she turns out to be a matter of fun to the society, her community tries to protect her. Being unaware of the intricacies of law, they fail in all their moves. Through Kenjira's life, the film portrays the pitiable condition of the tribes now. Later, they are being ostracized and pushed out from their tribal colony. Also get forbidden from the forest. They loose both their spaces at the forest and their colony. They get struck emotionally and literally amidst the rivers. All of them disperse. Later, Kenjira hugging her kid, wanders in the river and strives to get back to a bank.
Director Bio : MANOJ KANA (DIRECTOR’S PROFILE) Manoj Kana is a veteran Malayalam theatre artist and film director. He has been involved in the theatre circuit for over twenty years. He has directed fifteen stage plays and two films many of which have won state awards. Kana was born 1973 Payyannur, in Kannur district of Kerala, India. He is also a social activist with active participation in societal issues of importance. He is a self made achiever and has evolved as a distinct face among the artists and playwrights in India. He is a Post Graduate Diploma Holder from C- DIT (Govt of Kerala). His famous theatre works include "Piranha", "Uratti" (Tribal God), "Onnam Prathi" (First Accused), "Currency" etc. Chayillam and Amoeba are the two films directed by him . DIRECTOR’S NOTE What is presented in Kenchira, is direct expression of Adivasi life. Though there are several tribes among Adivasis, Paniyas have highest contact with the general population. Unfortunately they are the most backward among the Adivasis. ‘Kenchira’ is their story. They narrate their life in their own language.
