Synopsis : The film is set in one of the remotest villages of Majuli, which is considered to be the largest riverine island in the world. There lives Khagen Das with his wife Numali and a young daughter Kuwali. Like other villagers of the area, Khagen and his family too live hand to mouth and struggle for the basics of life. But the villagers are skillfully coping up with their daily struggles with wild visitors, flood and other issues and trying to be content amidst all these. As time goes on, Khagen's life suddenly turns challenging. Once while taking his daughter out to a nearby Raasleela programme, his house was attacked by the wild elephants that come to the nearby villages in search of food. Their house was completely shattered and also left Numali critically injured. Khagen feels helpless finding his wife in such a dire condition so he decides to carry her in his bicycle to the nearest health centre which is located at a distance of 14 odd kilometres that also needs a dilapidated bamboo bridge to be crossed. But soon after reaching the hospital, the wife dies. Khagen's life shattered in just few moments. He is yet to believe it but looking at the daughter he gathers courage and decides to carry the body back to his home on that very night. But the hospital guard assures him to leave the next morning as the ambulance would be there to carry the body. So Khagen waits till dawn but having got no news from the ambulance driver, he decides to move ahead. So he ties the body of his wife in the bicycle and walks through the pebbled road with daughter Kuwali. This entire journey is juxtaposed with their emotional turmoil and the practical struggle of carrying a dead body in such manner. Sometimes they are broken in tears, sometimes the daughter stops to fetch water for her father and at times they sit almost senseless with utter fatigue. While still half a way to their home, two reporters happen to cross them on the road. The reporters stop by to get the story covered But Khagen smelling something fishy does not bother to answer them. The reporters soon sent the video clips to the news agency and immediately the news of Khagen carrying the dead body of his wife in a bicycle gets aired and it creates a sensation in just few hours. The news got spread like a wildflower and villagers came out in groups to receive Khagen on the roads. Khagen on the other hand tries to escape people's attention and takes a jungle route to reach his home. According to him people are more dangerous than the wild animals. Everyone, including the local MLA gather near the half broken bridge for Khagen. Reporters from other channels too arrive. The entire incident is presented like a TRP show by the outside world. Everybody's eyes are fixed at the road but Khagen does not reach. The entire thing gets politicised and different social and political groups play their parts. Meanwhile Khagen reaches a location where he is able to get in touch with two of his village friends and they together conduct the last rite of Numali. On the other side the MLA, media persons and some of the local people decide to visit Khagen's house for which they all walk through the bridge. Already half broken, the bridge could not take the load and it falls apart causing all people drop in the river. But Khagen unware of anything, walks towards his house with daughter Kuwali.
