Synopsis : Impoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, goes to search for better livelihood, leaving behind his wife Sarbojaya, daughter Durga, younger son Apu and his elderly aunt Indir in the village. In these circumstances, Sarbojaya finds it quite difficult to make both ends meet and manage the children on her own. Durga the teenage daughter and her kid brother Apu are two happy go-lucky children and share an excellent bond with each other. Durga and Apu find immese unadulterated joy amidst Nature. Both children are fond of Indir Thakrun. Indir Thakrun is also affectionate towards the children. The children enjoy the small pleasures in their difficult lives, while their parents suffer from the daily indignities heaped upon them. The family would often fall prey to severe crisis with no support until finally Durga loses her life at a very tender age and utter sorrow descends upon the family. Harihar comes back and finds his wife crest-fallen, decides to leave the village forever and heads for Kashi.
