Synopsis : Following the suppression of his voice and his compliance with the management to rescue his family from its goons, a principled trade union leader, Anand Verma, abandons his family and leaves the town to evade the taunts of his fellow labourers. His wife, Sumitra Devi brings her children, Vijay and Ravi, to Mumbai in search of a better life. Here, the boys grow up amid hardships, choosing paths that build a metaphorical wall between them—Vijay acquires wealth through his induction into the world of crime while Ravi becomes a police officer. Faith, morality, and principles are put to question as the brothers are brought face to face in a thrilling climax that culminates in a tragic end. With some of the most iconic lines in the history of Hindi cinema, Deewar is considered a pathbreaking classic for it underlines several issues prevalent during the time of its release, and adds dimension to roles that had thus far been mere stereotypes. Review:From Bachchan’s monologue with God to “mere paas maa hai,” the dialogues became part of folklore. When a young Vijay doesn’t take the money thrown at him, Davar (Iftekhar leads a versatile support cast) says, “Yeh lambi race ka ghodahai…” The lines proved prophetic, not just for Vijay but also Bachchan.”—Anuj Kumar, The Hindu OR “Although Deewaar’s USP remains Bachchan’s high-strung dialogues, be it “aaj khush toh bohut hoge tum” or the iconic “mere paas ma hai,” his portrayal of Vijay was remarkably subtle in the other emotionally-charged scenes. Incidentally, it was his turn as Vijay that cemented his image as the “angry young man,” an image he would go onto mine even as a septuagenarian, a la Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham and Mohabbatein.”—Pratishruti Ganguly, Firstpost OR “It is a brilliantly crafted psychological portrait of the damaged Vijay in particular, supported by simply stunning performances from Amitabh Bachchan and Alankar Joshi, who plays Vijay as a boy. There is nothing wasted—not a word, not a look, not a nuance, not a scene.” –MemsaabStory
