Synopsis : Michelle McNally, who loses her senses of sight and hearing to an illness at the age of two, grows volatile and vehement with time till, at the age of eight, an elderly alcoholic teacher, Debraj Sahai, decides to teach her how to express and communicate. While his methods initially earn much disapproval, Michelle slowly adapts to his ways and eventually transforms into woman who can express, dance and sign. She enrolls into a bachelor’s degree course, relocating and living with Debraj and his maid, and keeps going despite the many challenges she faces in her education. Meanwhile, Debraj, owing to his Alzheimer’s,decides to leave her. At their reunion twelve years later, Michelle having finally graduated and Debraj so afflicted that he is incapable of speech, she reaches out to the rain outside his hospital’s window with his hand in hers, and they say the first syllable of “water,” evocative of a pivotal moment in their past. Rani Mukherjee wore dark-tinted contact lenses to cover up her famous green eyes. The film is based on screenwriter Prakash Kapadia's Gujarati play "AatamVinjhePaankh", which was inspired from "The Miracle Worker." "Black" won 11 Filmfare awards, only Indian movie with most Filmfares.
