Synopsis : Guilt- ridden Merchant Navy Captain Vijay Pal Singh, condemned by society, disowned by his parents, and dubbed a coward for forsaking his ship, putting the lives of over 300 passengers at peril, starts working at a coal mine where he befriends Ravi, an engineer in charge of the mine, and finds a foe in Mangal, an escaped convict also working there. Plagued by fever dreams of the bygone days, Vijay gets into fights with Mangal who tries causing trouble for the miners, one such fight wounding Mangal who is carried to Dr. Sudha’s surgery and given blood to by Vijay himself. A friendship is fostered between the two and they team up with Ravi to rebel against the wrongs of Dhanraj, the unjust and selfish owner of the coal mine. The trio saves the lives of hundreds of coal miners trapped underground, but in the course of it, Ravi’s leg is maimed and Mangal loses his life. Review: “…this was Amitabh's show all the way. Vijay is a decorated naval officer who, disgraced by his actions, dishonourably discharged from the navy, and disowned by his family, seeks oblivion in this dusty little town. His hatred is for self, and he lives with it. He volunteers for the most dangerous jobs, regardless of danger. All his actions are driven by a desire to prove he is not a kaayar, a burzdil (coward). And Yash Chopra channelised that anger in a way that seared the screen.”—Anuradha Warrier, Conversations Over Chai
