Synopsis : The film opens at an award ceremony where Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee, when asked to make a speech about his book, ‘Anand,’ tells that it is based on his diary entries from when he met Anand. The oncologist recounts how he, despite treating the poor free of charge, was often dismayed at the fact that he could not treat all the afflictions in the world. Unlike his friend, Dr. Kulkarni, he did not rob wealthy hypochondriacs, and grew cynical after witnessing suffering and poverty all around him. Then, upon meeting Anand, a man diagnosed with lymphosarcoma of the intestine—a rare type of cancer—who chose to remain lively and help others for the limited time he had, the pessimistic doctor’s nature began to evolve. They became good friends, Anand being amiable and possessing the ability to befriend anyone. Though Anand’s health deteriorated with time, he preferred being a free bird to spending the last vestiges of his life in a hospital bed. His own love lost to his disease and remaining unrequited, Anand aided Bhaskar in expressing his love for Renu. As Anand’s condition gradually weakened, and he recorded Bhaskar and himself, reciting poems and dialogues and laughing together, on tape. Anand took his last breath surrounded by friends when Bhaskar was away to fetch him medicines. Bhaskar returned to find Anand dead and pleaded with the latter to speak to him. The tape played with Anand’s voice in the background and his friends wept. Like the balloons floating up in the sky, Anand, too, departed, heaven bound at last. Review: “For a movie with a terminally ill patient as the protagonist, Anand is anything but gloomy. It is lyrical in the way it treats death: like a poem with which we have a preordained tryst. Death, in Anand, does not cast a dark shadow on any of the delights that the beautiful journey of life has to offer.”— Sandeep Padhi, Film Companion
