Synopsis : A work of mise en abyme, No Bears mirrors the agony of Iran and of the artist trying to create something in the land being patrolled by its morality police- the ‘bears.’ It chronicles two parallel love stories in which invisible yet inevitable obstructions, superstitions and power dynamics impede the hopes and dreams of the couples. The narrative, framed by Panahi playing a director bearing his own name and caught in circumstances strikingly similar to his own, is a subtle commentary on and a strong protest against the strict Iranian regime.
Director Bio : Iranian film director, screenwriter, and film editorJafar Panahi (born 11 July, 1960), regularly associated with the Iranian New Wave, is noted for making films with a humanistic perspective, focusing on the hardships of children, women and the impoverished in his native land. Following his long-standing strife with the Iranian government over the subject matter of his projects, which often led to his films being prohibited in the home country, and subsequent arrest in the year 2010, he was accused of propaganda against the government, resulting in a six-year jail sentence and a ban of twenty years on directing films, screenwriting, being interviewed or leaving the country except on account of medical treatment or the Hajj pilgrimage. However, the internationally acclaimed storyteller, with a Caméra d'Or, a Golden Leopard, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear and two Silver Bears to his credit, continues to persevere in his resolve to tell stories of the unheard.
