Synopsis : When widowed Govindi is accused of theft by her employer, the zamindar Hariram, she dies of shock, leaving behind two sons—Gungaram and Jumna. As they transition to adulthood, the gutsy and hardworkingGunga supports the education of his younger brother, the vigilant and restrained Jumna. However, things take a turn for the worse when Gungarescues Dhanno, a village belle, from the zamindar’s lascivious assault. The zamindarsends the latter into prison by incriminating him of robbery. However, following his release, he finds his brother—whom he had sent to the city to study--impoverished, and, in a fit of rage, attacks and raids the zamindar. Realizing that his actions have made him an outlaw, he joins a gang of bandits out in the wilderness, with Dhanno at his side. Gunga soon finds his relationships at stake when he is challenged by Jumna-- who now returns to his hometown as a police officer-- in a confrontation where he must choose between family and duty.
Director Bio : Indian film director, screenwriter and cinematographer, Nitin Bose (26 April 1897 – 14 April 1986), was the first to use playback singing in Indian cinema- in the Bengali film, Bhagya Chakra, and its Hindi remake, DhoopChhaon, in 1935. After working with New Theatres in Calcutta, he relocated to Bombay where he directed under the banners of Bombay Talkies and Filmistan.
