Synopsis : Based on Imtiaz Ali Taj’ s play, Anarkali, K. Asif’s magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam, depicts the story of the star- crossed lovers, Prince Salim, son of Emperor Akbar and Jodhabai, and Anarkali (meaning pomegranate blossom), a court- dancer. Sent off to war as a hedonistic boy, Salim returns fourteen years later as a notable soldier and builds a forbidden relationship with Anarkali. His father objects to this and imprisons the girl but she repudiates his command to decline Salim’s love. On the other hand, Salim’s loss in the rebellion against his father results in a death sentence for him. Anarkali pleads with Akbar to punish her instead of Salim, and is doomed to be entombed alive. At the initiation of the condemnation, Akbar is reminded by Anarkali’s mother that he still owes her a favour, given that it was she who delivered the news of Salim’s birth to him, and the emperor yields to her wish that her daughter’s life be spared. However, though Anarkali secretly escapes into exile where she is to live in anonymity with her mother, she is declared dead. Salim must never learn that she survives
