Synopsis : As the title in English suggests, a little ironically, to the middle-class section as an individual—this film reflects the moral dilemma between his day-to-day life problems and ideals. In 70’s India, there was a huge no of educated, middle-class youths in the market waiting to be employed. The title in Bengali refers to the maddening rat race growing by leaps and bounds in the corporate market. Indeed, the job markets have made humans wild in nature, as a forest is a home to the wild. Somnath is also such a hopeless candidate. Failing miserably in exams due to poor handwriting and being unable to find a job, Somnath becomes a middleman and starts his own business, on the advice of Bishuda. But on his way to earn living, he must take the wrong path. Will he be able to take it? One of the rare films of Satyajit Ray, which portrays middle-class conflicts,in 70s Calcutta—as Sen’s movies do, is very much directly political, without any kind of soft symbolization or disguise, as the fairy tales do.
