Synopsis : Based on Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay’s eternal classic, Tarun Majumdar’s Ganadevata showcases the director’s knowledge of feudal Bengal and human psychology. Set in the rural Shibkalipur, inhabited primarily by farmers, the film highlights how the rapidly industrializing society ushers in a clash between age-old customs and new forces of change, and results in a decline in social relations as well as personal bonds. Portraying both degradation and celebration in all their rawness, the film underlines the prominence of caste system and hypocrisy in this village. With India’s imminent independence in its backdrop, it depicts the essence of a village community where, despite regular conflicts, the predicament of an individual becomes the collective plight, and the people stand united in the face of adversity.
