Synopsis : Rajiv Pator, a PhD candidate at Gauhati University, visits the Muslim dominated, remote villages of Nellie to look into the events leading up to the massacre of Muslims on February 18, 1983, also known as the Nellie massacre, the darkest chapter in the sociopolitical history of Assam. His objective is to discover the truth about what transpired. When he visits the site, Nellie, forty years after the massacre, he discovers that the Muslims who died in the massacre are hardworking individuals who have made efforts to integrate with the Assamese community. In the Muslim villages, by gazing into the eyes of the Muslim children, he was able to witness the purity of their souls. Moreover, his study exposes a unique truth and reality that differs from the widely accepted account of the event. However, he had yet to uncover many truths about Nellie.
Director Bio : Parthajit Baruah is a filmmaker from Assam, north-east India. His debut feature film is 'The Nellie Story' (2023). He was born and brought up in a small town, Nagaon of Assam, North-East, India. Earlier, he made eleven documentaries and they were screened at many national and international film festivals. Some of his documentaries are: Laxmi Orang (2014), The Dhemaji Tragedy (2015), Chiaroscuro (2019), Breaking the Silence (2020), The Children of God (2021) and Brush Stroke (2022). His father, the late Prasanna Kumar Baruah, founded the Sunlit Studio photography studio in 1967. Parthajit Baruah produces his films under the name of his family's now-defunct photography studio, “Sunlit Studio”, in honour of his late father.
