Synopsis : Hilarion Zabala, a retired military officer, suffers from phantosmia, a recurring phantom smell suspected to stem from deep psychological trauma. His counselor believes that confronting past traumas is essential for healing. Hilarion must revisit his dark military past, particularly the grim experiences he endured, to find closure. Reassigned to the isolated Pulo Penal Colony, he faces both the haunting shadows of his former life and the brutal realities of his current environment. This challenging journey forces him to confront unresolved horrors, seeking redemption and release from his tormenting sensory affliction.
Director Bio : Lavrente Indico Diaz, born in 1958, is a renowned Filipino independent filmmaker and a significant figure in the slow cinema movement, known for creating some of the longest narrative films. He began his career in the late 1990s, gaining international recognition with his debut, Serafin Geronimo (1999), presented at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, followed by Naked Under the Moon (2000) and Batang West Side (2001). His 2013 film Norte, the End of History brought European acclaim at Cannes. Notable works include From What Is Before (2014), which won Locarno’s Golden Leopard, A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (2016), and The Woman Who Left (2016), which earned him the Venice Golden Lion. Diaz received lifetime achievement awards from FAMAS (2018) and Gawad Urian (2021).
