Synopsis : In 2001, in Datong, China, Qiao Qiao, a working-class woman, dates her manager, Guao Bin, while making a living as a singer and club performer. When Bin leaves to seek work in another province, he promises to return for her once he’s financially stable. After waiting, Qiao Qiao searches for him, traveling through regions displaced by the Three Gorges Dam. Meanwhile, Bin engages in risky business ventures. When they reunite, Qiao Qiao ultimately breaks up with him. Years later, they meet again, aged, in COVID-era China, reflecting on their shared past as a testament to resilience through changing times.
Director Bio : Jia Zhangke is a pioneering Chinese filmmaker known for his keen socio-political insights and explorations of rapid transformation in modern China. Born in 1970 in Fenyang, Shanxi Province, Jia studied film direction at the Beijing Film Academy. His works, often centered on ordinary lives affected by political and social upheaval, gained international acclaim with films like Platform (2000) and A Touch of Sin (2013), capturing the pulse of contemporary China. Known for his unique documentary-style narrative, Jia is a leading voice in the "Sixth Generation" of Chinese cinema and has received multiple international awards for his thought-provoking storytelling.
