Synopsis : Madame Beudet, an intelligent and oppressed woman is trapped in a loveless marriage with her foolish and domineering husband. When her husband’s absurd behavior pushes her to the edge, she attempts to rebel in small ways, ultimately leading to a misunderstanding that could have tragic consequences.
Director Bio : Germaine Dulac (1882–1942) was a pioneering French filmmaker and a key figure in the French avantgarde cinema movement. Initially a journalist and theater critic, Dulac transitioned into filmmaking in the early 20th century. Her works are known for their feminist themes and visual experimentation, as seen in The Smiling Madame Beudet (1923), which is widely regarded as one of the first feminist films. Dulac also directed the surrealist film The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928), further cementing her influence in film history.
